Collection: Custom Fiber Processing & Mini Mill Services

Looking for wool processing in Virginia, USA? Our on-site mini mill specializes in small-batch fiber processing, turning your raw fleece into roving. We handle most sheep wool with individual care. Located in Tappahannock, Virginia, we accept local drop-offs and mail-in orders. Contact us to discuss getting your fibers processed with us before shipping or dropping off your fibers.

Important Details:

  • Turnaround times vary depending on our current workload. We will keep you updated during the process.
  • All mail-in orders will be mailed at the customer's expense.
  • We do not process alpaca, mohair, and other exotic fibers including Leicester Longwool. If not sure, please contact us and we will let you know if we can process your fibers.
  • We recommend preparing your fleece to ensure it is not excessively soiled. Excessively soiled fleeces will incur additional cost or rejection.
  • Of note, we charge by the initial fleece weight. Final weight of your roving will more than likely be less than what was dropped off due to cleaning and some loss during the processing.
  • Once processed, we will hold your completed roving for a maximum of 2 weeks. If no response and/or final payment is received within 2 weeks of processing, wool will be forfeited and turned into blankets/clothing for the homeless/needy.
  • If you are no longer able to pay for your fleece to be processed and decide to forfeit it, your fleece will be processed into blankets for the homeless/needy.

Pricing:

  • Wash and carding - $25 per pound.
  • Excessively soiled wool wash and carding - $50 per pound.
  • Before work starts on your fleece, a 50% deposit is required.

Preparing your fleece for milling:

Skirt:

  • We will not process unskirted fleeces.
  • Remove tags and manure:  Any wool with poop on it.
  • Remove belly and leg wool:  Short, matted, or heavily soiled fibers which cannot be processed and will add to your initial weight of wool.
  • Second Cuts:  Short little snips which cannot be processed and will add to your initial weight of wool.

Pick:

  • Remove vegetable matter.
  • Remove matter such as burrs, cockleburs, or excessive straw.
  • Excessive matter will incur additional cost or rejection.

Structural Integrity:

  • Check for integrity of wool. Grab a lock and pull firmly on both ends. If it breaks with a "ping" sound or tears easily, the fleece is weak and will be rejected.
  • Weak fibers are best used for felting.

Dry:

  • Ensure it is 100% dry.
  • Never bag or ship damp wool. Moisture in a plastic bag leads to mold and rots quickly.
  • We will not accept wet/moldy fleeces.

Bagging & Labeling

  • Place individual fleeces in their own clear plastic bag (unscented kitchen trash bags work well).
  • Squeeze out as much air as possible before tying.
  • Include a 5X8 index card inside the bag with: Name, phone number, email, and animal name (if wanted roving separated by animal).

What we will NOT accept:

  • Fiber with moth casings or live insects.
  • Moldy or mildewed fiber
  • Wet fiber
  • Unskirted "raw" fleece straight off the animal without any prep.
